A few local things worth knowing
Wood swells in our wet fall and winter, which is why doors that were fine in August start to rub by November. Sometimes a door needs a small adjustment rather than a bigger fix. In newer homes, a house settling can pull hinges and strike plates slightly out of line. Both are quick to put right. Closet doors on a track are a common one in condos and townhouses: usually it's a worn roller or a bent track rather than a new door.
Common questions
Why does my door only stick in winter?
Wood takes on moisture when it's humid, so the door swells and rubs. Depending on where it rubs, a hinge adjustment or lightly planing the edge usually fixes it.
My closet door keeps coming off its track. Can you fix it?
Usually. It's often a worn roller, a bent or dirty track, or a door that's out of level. Send a photo of the top and bottom of the door.
Should I buy the replacement hardware first?
Either way works. If you're not sure what part you need, send me a photo before you buy.
Can you fix a cabinet door that keeps coming loose?
Usually, yes. It's often a worn hinge, a stripped screw hole or a door that's out of alignment. Send a photo of the hinge area.
